October 2011
We give thanks

…because the community of Kelyenmagategma of the Enxet Sur indigenous people of the Paraguayan Chaco has been granted legal title to 8700 hectares of their ancestral land, after a 10 year struggle.  During their struggle Kelyenmagategma people suffered violent evictions, legal persecution and loss of lives.  We pray for the members of the community as they return to their ancestral land and begun to build a new life, and for the organizations that will continue to accompany them, including CWS partner the Committee of Churches for Emergency Aid (CIPAE).

… because Denisse Pichardo, from Caminante, one of our partners in the children’s program, was honored with the Humanitarian Award 2011 given by World of Children. This award recognizes individuals who make a difference in the lives of children worldwide. We congratulate and are thankful for Denisse’s and Caminate’s work and commitment in assisting children victims or vulnerable to violence in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic.

We pray…

… because this month the school year starts in Haiti, but nearly 40% of children do not attend primary school.  The new president, Michel Martelly, has an ambitious five-year plan to make primary education accessible and free to all Haitian children. We pray that this vision can be made a reality, and that all those involved will be unified so that the children of Haiti can receive the education that they deserve.
