US Policy in the Region

Confronting the root causes of poverty requires government policies that promote peace and social justice. US policy has an especially powerful impact on the governments and peoples of Cuba and Colombia.

Colombia. The Colombian government cares deeply about US perceptions of poor human rights record, and the impact on its foreign aid and prospects for a US free trade agreement. We urgently ask the US government to call for respect for human rights in Colombia, and to shift from military aid to humanitarian and development assistance.

Cuba. The decades-long US embargo is a failed and unjust policy that harms the Cuban people and restricts US civil liberties. We call upon the US government to change this policy and remove all restrictions on US travel to Cuba.

Immigration reform. We also call on policy makers to effect immigration reforms that reunite separated families, ensure due process, protect workers from exploitation, end unnecessary detention, and provide a path to earned legal status for undocumented immigrants.

We lift our voices…
CWS raises the voices of our member communions with letters and visits to the US government calling for policies that respond to the needs of poor and marginalized people throughout the world.

We support the work of the Washington Office on Latin America... CWS LAC supports the work of the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) to achieve US policies that promote human rights, democracy and social justice in Latin America.

We work in coalition…

We join with US farmers...
We celebrate those US farmers and other concerned volunteers bringing the message to Washington DC about the need to support agricultural production, reduce hunger and promote social justice worldwide. Foods Resource Bank grassroots volunteers raise money and awareness for agricultural development, working hand in hand with 15 mainline Christian denominations and their agencies. FRB has been a partner with us, supporting our work on food and nutritional security in Central America and the Caribbean. Learn more about their Heart of the Hill initiative!
